Human Movement

The advancements we have made pail in comparison to the initial human movement engineering.

Often, as strength coaches, we get the “new shiny object” syndrome. We read about the latest gadget that increased our vertical an inch or two, or dropped our 40 time one tenth of a second.

It is new, so it inspires us and draws us in.

It is much like putting all the focus on the trophy we won or lost at the end of a season, year, or four year Olympic Cycle. We are fixated on the 1 percent time frame (the prize) and quickly dismiss the 99 percent time frame it took to prepare.

We are often focused on the wrong end of things.

Human movement was designed to survive and advance. I know this may sound shocking, but it was designed without the help of speed and strength coaches! Actually, this should be so exciting to hear and better yet, understand.

If we just realized that we have the Ferrari almost completely done before it gets into the hands of us strength coaches.

However, for some reason we disregard the intricacies of this amazing machine and what it already has under its hood. We would much rather spend 99 percent of our time disregarding what is right in front of us and worry about the bells and whistles. What a wasteful approach.

The bells and whistle certainly do matter, but they MUST come after we have exhausted the workings of the computer system already made for us. This human computer system was designed to respond and react to its environment. It was designed to adjust and use its reflexes to explode, attack, or avoid. It’s sitting right there primed and ready to be stimulated, but no…we want to go right to the “new cool” stuff that sells memberships easier or gets parents to jump on board sooner.

Don’t get me wrong. Use what you must use to get results that are safe and integrity based. But for goodness sake, stop overlooking the 99 percent of perfectly designed engineering for what’s behind door #3.
